The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
