The Young Spinner Earns Surprise Inclusion in English Ashes Team
England have chosen a twelve-player selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the first Test to decide whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about either fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers
The England coach had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged five past matches.
During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to provide some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the lower order.
However McCullum has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the series.
In July, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
